What “UBC-GIF v6.0” Refers To
The UBC-GIF produces a family of forward modeling and inversion codes for geophysics. The “v6.0” designation applies to several core 3D packages:
MAG3D v6.0
3D forward modeling and inversion of total magnetic intensity (TMI) and amplitude magnetic data .
GRAV3D v6.0
3D forward modeling and inversion of gravity data .
GG3D v6.0
3D forward modeling and inversion of gravity gradiometry data (surface, borehole, and airborne). Key improvements in this version include handling full-tensor gradiometer (FTG) and raw Falcon/VK1 data, depth weighting, sparse norms for compact/blocky models, and wavelet compression for larger problems .
💻 Access & Licensing
These codes are proprietary and are not freely distributed. They require either an academic license (for research purposes, typically held by a supervising professor) or a commercial license . Restricted versions of DCIP2D, MAG3D, and GRAV3D are available without applying for a license .
🛠️ Modern Workflow: GIFtools
Because the original Fortran codes are challenging to use directly (requiring manual file preparation), the UBC-GIF developed GIFtools, a graphical user interface (GUI) framework. It helps users gather data, interact with the Fortran executables, and manage projects, serving as the modern front-end for the UBC-GIF v6.0 codes .
