Overview of WormLab 2024.1

WormLab 2024.1 is a minor update to the WormLab 2024 software suite from MBF Bioscience, a comprehensive hardware and software solution for imaging, tracking, and quantitative behavioral analysis of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and other nematodes. This version builds on the patented worm-tracking technology to enable fully automated characterization of behaviors like crawling, swimming, thrashing, omega bends, coiling, and self-overlap. It’s designed for neurobiology, genetics, and pharmacology research, allowing researchers to process large datasets efficiently and extract metrics such as speed, direction, distance traveled, posture changes, and sinusoidal movement amplitude.

The 2024 release emphasizes improved handling of larger video sequences and enhanced flexibility, particularly for Mac users, making it suitable for high-throughput assays in academic and industrial labs.

Key Features

  • Automated Tracking: Patented algorithms for real-time or post-hoc tracking of single or multiple worms, supporting assays like optogenetics, mechanosensation, and long-term imaging.
  • Quantitative Analysis: Dozens of built-in metrics for behavior quantification, including dynamic posture analysis and complex movement detection (e.g., entanglements).
  • Video Support: Compatible with various formats (.avi, .mov, .mpg, .mp4, .wmv) and codecs; recommends 5-10 fps for crawling and 14-30 fps for swimming, with high-resolution scaling (≤10 μm/pixel) for accuracy.
  • Video Capture Module (Optional): Streamed or time-lapse capture with intervals as short as 0.25 seconds; new in 2024: set exact time durations for consistent sequences (e.g., 1-minute clips).
  • Project File Efficiency: Uses a binary format for faster handling of large datasets; auto-converts legacy XML files.
  • Platform Enhancements: New floating license for Mac, allowing license portability across computers (requires active subscription and internet).
